The hidden half of domestic violence

How to have eternal life

Songs In the Night

I remember when I was around 13 or 14, I lived in a small town in
Upstate New York. I was a new Christian so I wanted to go to church.
I use to ride my bike to the next town to do so. When I went to the
evening service, it was often dark when I was going home. Oh I think
I was typical of any young teenager, I was not too comfortable on a
dark lonely road at night. I remember to scare away whatever may
have been lurking in the shadows; I use to sing...out loud. The song
I remember singing the most, was "Now I belong to Jesus...Jesus
belongs to me....not for the years of time alone, but for eternity"

I guess I wanted anything around to know that I was the KINGS kid and
no body better mess with me or they would have to deal with HIM!
(then again, maybe it was my singing that scared them away) At any
rate, it was the songs in the night that gave me comfort.

Songs in the night! These songs can either bring comfort, or they
can add to our distress. It all depends on who gives the song.

What Is the Source of Your Music?

The Word of God tells a lot about songs. They are one of most
powerful ways to praise God. Think about the number of songs that
talk about praise. Are you going through some difficult times right
now? Praise is the key to victory my friend. Praise got Jonah out of
the whale and Peter out of the jail. This is from Whale Rides:

How often do we want to do things OUR way? We even come up with lies
to show how it was God's will for it to be our way. But we do it at
the cost of mercy...and at the expense of one WHALE of a ride.

Jonah was STILL in the belly of this great fish. The prayer meeting
had been going on for sometime. But we find another thing happening
in verse 9 "But I will sacrifice unto thee with the voice of
thanksgiving; I will pay that that I have vowed. Salvation is of the

Jonah started PRAISING the LORD. Much at Paul and Silas in the
prison, their release came after they sang praises unto God (Acts
16:25) the same occurred to Jonah. Verse 9: "And the LORD spake unto
the fish, and it vomited out Jonah upon the dry land.

My friend, are you in hard and difficult times right now? Is your
home broken, your heart broken? Wonder where the money is going to
come from for the bills? Is your health in shambles?

Yes it is hard to praise in the midst of the storm. This is one
reason why praise is called a sacrifice.

Psalm 27:6 And now shall mine head be lifted up above mine enemies
round about me: therefore will I offer in his tabernacle sacrifices
of joy; I will sing, yea, I will sing praises unto the LORD.

Praise can also restore broken relationships.

"Right now, I am sitting here, thinking about my grandkids. I have
seen the smiles, the beaming faces when they are told "GREAT JOB
GABER" or WOW! JENA THAT IS SOOO GOOD !" But I have also seen the
frown, the facial expression of a broken heart when someone may have
rudely without thinking said something like "How dumb can you be.
You are an idiot"

Are we not told that if we tell our kids they are stupid, they will
tend to prove it to us? Are we not told that they will tend to rise
OR fall to our level of expectation?"

Nehemiah 12:46 For in the days of David and Asaph of old there were
chief of the singers, and songs of praise and thanksgiving unto God.

Job 35:10 But none saith, Where is God my maker, who giveth songs in
the night;

Psalm 119:54 Thy statutes have been my songs in the house of my

Isaiah 35:10
And the ransomed of the LORD shall return, and come to Zion with
songs and everlasting joy upon their heads: they shall obtain joy and
gladness, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away.

How many of you know a song about "Hot Dogs" My guess is that right
now you are thinking....."I wish I was a wiener..." For many of us,
all we need to do is to hear a small section of a song, and we can
think of the product that used it..products from tooth paste to

Do you know we are told to teach others using songs?

Colossians 3:16
Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching
and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs,
singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.

Songs can bring great comfort. They can tame the savage beast. I
have read reports that cows give more milk when the right songs are
played in the barn. Other reports tell about other ways animals
respond to music. Mary Allen has been fiddling while forests burn
around this British Columbia interior town -- and that's a good
thing. Allen's gentle melodies soothe severely stressed livestock
that were evacuated from the path of the McLure-Barriere and
Strawberry Hill wildfires to the KXA exhibition grounds. "You'd be
surprised how much of a positive, calming effect music has on
animals," Takhar said.

Is there any wonder that our LORD gives us songs in the night? How
often have we been in distress but then we hear just the right song?
I have heard about someone in critical condition in a hospital
recovering when music was played. Often it is the only thing that
person can remember.

Jericho was one of the strongest cities in the promise land, if not
the strongest. This stronghold was pulled down..with music...songs
of deliverance!

Psalm 32:7
Thou art my hiding place; thou shalt preserve me from trouble; thou
shalt compass me about with songs of deliverance.

My friend, what stronghold do YOU have right now? Disease? Broken
relationships? Pain? Wayward children? Joblessness leading to bill
problems? Whatever the problem, God will give you a song in the
night...a song of deliverance but we need to focus on one song
first...Turn your eyes upon Jesus...look full in HIS wonderful
face..and the things on earth will grow strangely dim, in the light
of HIS glory and grace.

God gave the song.
